Walk into any van gathering and you'll see the same three vans: Sprinter, ProMaster, Transit. Together they account for the overwhelming majority of camper conversions in the US. Each has real strengths and real weaknesses, and the "best" van depends entirely on your budget, your travel style, and how much maintenance pain you'll tolerate.
The short version
- Buy the Sprinter if you want the best resale value, available 4x4, and the premium badge โ and you can stomach premium maintenance costs.
- Buy the ProMaster if you want the most interior space per dollar, the lowest purchase price, and front-wheel-drive winter confidence.
- Buy the Transit if you want the best driving experience, strong engines, available AWD, and the biggest dealer network for service.

Mercedes Sprinter
The Sprinter is the default van-life van for a reason: it holds value better than anything else, the diesel drivetrain is famously long-lived, and 4x4 models go places the others can't. A 4x4 Sprinter with a good build is the blue-chip asset of the van world.
The catches are real, though:
- Maintenance is expensive. Mercedes parts and labor cost Mercedes money. A dealer oil change can run $300+. Independent Sprinter specialists exist โ find yours before you buy.
- Diesel emissions systems (DEF, DPF) on 2010+ models can be troublesome and costly when they fail. Short trips that never get the exhaust hot are the enemy.
- Rust. Older Sprinters (pre-2019 especially) are notorious for it. Inspect wheel wells, rockers, and the windshield frame carefully.
- The 2019+ gas 2.0L turbo models dodge the diesel-emissions issues and are cheaper to service โ worth a look if you don't need 4x4 diesel.
Ram ProMaster
The ProMaster is the rational choice. It's the cheapest to buy, the cheapest to maintain (the 3.6L Pentastar V6 is one of the most common engines in America โ any shop can work on it), and its boxy, front-wheel-drive layout gives you the most usable interior: the floor is flat with no driveshaft hump, the walls are nearly vertical, and it's wide enough to sleep sideways.
- Front-wheel drive is a genuine winter advantage and simplifies the interior build.
- Weakest resale of the three โ which makes it the best value on the used market.
- No factory 4x4/AWD option. Aftermarket 4x4 conversions exist but are expensive.
- Earlier models (2014โ2017) had transmission complaints; the later 9-speed is better regarded. As always, service records matter more than model year.
Ford Transit
The Transit is the enthusiast's pick โ it drives like a big car, not a truck. The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is powerful (great at altitude and for towing), AWD is available from the factory, and Ford's dealer network means you're never far from service. The high roof offers the most standing room of the three.
- Best driving dynamics by most accounts โ tightest turning, most car-like.
- AWD, not 4x4: excellent for snow and forest roads, not a rock crawler. Know the difference before you plan the Pan-American.
- EcoBoost fuel economy is the weakest of the three when driven hard โ turbos drink under boost.
- Slightly narrower body than ProMaster; most builds sleep front-to-back.
Which should you buy?
- Maximum adventure, money no object: Sprinter 4x4 diesel.
- Best value used buy: ProMaster โ let someone else take the depreciation.
- Daily driver that camps: Transit โ you'll enjoy driving it the other 300 days a year.
- Full-timing on a budget: ProMaster with a mid-range DIY build. Lowest total cost of ownership, full stop.
- Planning to sell in 3 years: Sprinter โ you'll get the most back.
Condition beats brand. A meticulously maintained ProMaster with full records will serve you better than a neglected Sprinter. Buy the best-maintained van in your budget, whatever the badge.
